A new study has discovered that consuming more refined grains may raise the chance of developing premature coronary artery disease (PCAD).

The study comprised 2,099 patients with PCAD who underwent coronary angiography at hospitals across Iran with catheterization labs from various cities and ethnic groups. The control group consisted of 1,168 individuals with normal coronary arteries, whereas 1,369 patients with CAD were included, with blockage equivalent to or higher than 75% in at least one coronary artery.

To assess dietary habits and ascertain the connection between whole grain and refined grain intake and the risk of PCAD in persons without a history of heart disease, participants filled out a food frequency questionnaire.

After adjusting for variables, it was found that consuming more refined grains was associated with a higher risk of PCAD, but consuming more whole grains was inversely associated with a lower risk.
